Data Backup Woes

$

Preface: Management at our company continues to read reports in the news about companies getting hit by ransomware, so they're wanting to implement a solution to help protect our data. Their initial thought is to purchase a NAS device, get it configured, then power it off - it would only get powered on when we need to copy/replicate data to it.I also need to note that we live/work in a hurricane zone so the other reason they thought about purchasing a NAS device is so it could be unplugged and stored in a safe case offsite if we ever need to evacuate.

Our Current Setup For Backups:
* We have a file server for our staff user shares and we use DFS in case our primary file server ever dies; users can continue to work with little to no outage. Total data is about 500GB.

* We have a storage server for all of our IT data (which includes our "IT...

Veeam Deployment Questions

Looking to get some advice on deployment with Veeam. We are MS shop with Hyper-V. Each site has an independent cluster.

We have servers at both our HQ and DR sites. The DR runs some production VMs, extra domain controllers, DHCP failover, etc..

The HQ has 2 physical servers - about 64GB ram, 2x 8c CPUs, and 2.8TB of local storage and 60TB of iSCSI storage. DR has 1 physical server - same specs.

It seems to me that Veeam should be configured at the DR site for 1-click failover. However, I don't really see much in terms of having a backup at the HQ as well. How is this handled?

Should all three servers run Hyper-V, then use hyper-v replication to migrate the actual Veeam backup VM across the sites? Or should I have multiple Veeam instances - 1 on each physical host?

Finally, should I join the backup servers to the domain?

Windows server 2019 WBADMIN backup commands

Switching from MS Server 2003 to MS server 2019.  Trying to reproduce the windows schedule backups from ntbackup to wbadmin.

It ran an incremental backup Monday to Friday then a full backup on Saturday (first Saturday with a monthly back up, the following Saturday backups were then weeks (week 2, week 3 etc....)). Just the one server HD to fully back up.

Having moved to 365 OWA the backup size is much smaller and the server being much faster we plan to run a full backup every night now.

So should the below command be sufficient to run every day (just changing the backup path to suit)?

wbadmin start backup -backupTarget:w:\backup\(day/month) -allCritical -include:C:  -quiet

Do I need -vssfull too?

Many thanks.

SMB - How to manage client backups

Good afternoon,

Just a question regarding client backups and if there is an easy way (automatic) to record client backup jobs completion results in one place.
We support say around 150 clients, each of them have multiple daily backups using Veeam backup and replication, QNAP for external drive backups and some clients are still using Backup exec :/
The main problem we have is sifting through all the daily emails reports, but if no email is received then they can be missed from being checked.
Not sure if there is a vendor out there that can help monitor the backup jobs? hopefully open source haha
Example:
So an email is receive saying 'success' this is then logged somewhere, same goes for no email received or a failed job.
An example would be to have all the clients listed somewhere and dependant on the notification received they would be...

AWS Tape StorageGateway Slow upload

Hi, hope anyone here with experience on AWS Storage TapeGateway can shed some light on this. My upload speed is avg at 13MB/s and Max at 20MB/s over a 500Mbps uplink connection? I would expect to get at least 40-50MB/s.

Here is my setting:
AWS Tape Gateway specs: 12 vcpus/ 12GB RAM/ Upload: 2TB Buffer: 2.5TB/ 1Gbps connection to backup repository (both on the same SAN)

Veeam Tape setting:
Blocksize of drive: 256KB
Tape size: 2TB each
Media Pools: Enable parallel processing for tape jobs 3 tape drives/ Enable parallel processing of backup chains within a single tape job / Encryption enable.

Veeam says bottleneck is Target.

Not sure why my upload speed is that slow. I got another remote repository and I can upload max 30-40MB/s to it pulling from the same local repository, meaning there is not any a bottleneck on my Network or transfer rate...

Azure Storage in Commvault

I'm busy investigating the Azure storage options for Commvault, and I noticed the article specifying that you need to configure Azure storage as Hot even though it's configured in Commvault as Archive. Am I interpreting this correctly?

https://documentation.commvault.com/commvault/v11/article?p=91299.htm

That does inflate the cost of Azure storage considerably, and I'm battling to understand why this is. the only thing I can think is because of any early access fees that apply to Azure Archive storage?

Can anyone give me the nod on this?

Thanks

I am trying Acronis out and using the conversion to VM feature in the backup jobs. I am testing it out on some of out physical servers. Our VM environment is Hyper-V. When the first backup job ran the VM was made, but when the next backup job ran the next day the conversion to VM failed with the following error.

Veeam Backup errors

Hi Everyone,

We recently set up Veeam Backup Agent for Windows on a few of our PC's.

All seem to be working perfectly fine, except for a couple that we received errors messages for as the backups failed. We have set these ones up the exact same was as the other ones so not sure what the error message actually means or why there even is an error.

These errors are below -
Failed to backup []
Error: Shared memory connection was closed. Agent failed to process method {FileBackup.SyncDirs}. Exception from server: An unexpected network error occurred. Failed to write data to the file [].

Error: The network path was not found. --tr:Error code: 0x00000035 --tr:FC: Failed to check whether file or folder . --tr:Failed to call DoRpc. CmdName: [FcIsExists]. The network path was not found.

+500TB backup solution

This is something I haven't had to revisit for several years since going from a large MSP to a smaller one. In the past, I've backed up our SOFS with CommVault. With much smaller customers, we've been leveraging Veeam but they are still only talking about the ability to backup scale-out/up NAS storage. Most of the files we're seeing growing rapidly are X-rays and other healthcare data needing to be stored for upwards of a decade or more (depending on pediatrics, oncology, etc). A lot of this growth is also to do with a health care system buying another, and consolidating their infrastructure; which in some cases is having to integrate a lot more data.

A lot of customer data doesn't need to be accessed very often, but we're now seeing archives just growing out of control. Rather than just default to "put it out into the cloud, there's...

Backing up data to a private cloud ??

Looking for a software which helps you to backup your data to a private cloud .

The backup software should be a multi-tier backup system and it should also allow to backup the files from your own server.

Any suggestions for the software?

Template - First in, First out rotation plan for Offsite 3 External Hard Drives

Hi there,

I'm going to have offsite backup with 3 external hard drives, by placing them in Authorized person's home, while it may not be the best practice to use external hard drives, I had to choose affordable option.

I want to use First In, First Out plan while moving external hard drives to Authorized person's home, now I'm looking for any Template or Picture which can explain our non-techie person, so he can coordinate with me to take the external hard drives to offsite (his home) and bring oldest copy to office from time to time. Yes, obviously I will Tag it with HDD1, HDD2 and HDD3.

Thanks!

Backup suggestion required

Hi All,

we are currently using Dell PowerEdge R730xd and PowerVault TL2000 for our backups.

In total 20 Servers run their nightly backups to the Dell server and it takes 2 LTO 6 tapes to store.

we are up for renewal and I was tasked to find a solution either a new server or a cloud solution.

Can some one suggest me if it is a good idea to use Cloud for backup or to keep onsite server.

I always used Onsite server because of our internet connection. But now we got good internet connection now. 1 Fiber with 100 MBPS and 1 Fiber with 250 MBPS.

Thank you,

Replicate from Nutanix to VMware (Commvault)

Hi all,

Do any Nutanix users here do a replication of their Nutanix machines to Vmware....using Commvault?
Does it work?

I asked a similar question about Veeam recently, and found out quickly it was not possible.

It seems we cannot transfer our existing Veeam licences (migrated or merged) to backup Nutanix.. so our partner is advising we move to Commvault. I'm not sure what the right move is at this stage. We've been using Veeam for 10 years. But our Socket based licenses are perpetual and can be used only to licenses Hyper-V or VMware Hosts.

windows server backup vs other paid software. Pros&Cons?

$

Hi Guy's,

I'm trying to understand the Pros of paid software for windows server backup.

Some details:

The goal: business continuity

The target of the backup: A windows server 2012 (no VM), C Drive and E drive.

C drive: 150GB

E drive: 3.9TB

I need a solutions if that server fails.

From now, I'm starting tests:

The current state is that I have a windows server backup schedule of backing-up bare metal server, C drive and E drive to a remote server.

I need to use the backup in a VM created on Hyper V (on another server) , So if something happens I'll create a new VM and use the backup files.

So I noticed that use the ALL backup files is not somthing that recovery mode "likes". I could manged to recover only C drive (and the system state) to a VM. E drive.. well, I mounted the backup file (the VHDX) to that VM, and transferred the files from that VHDX...
